5 Mistakes New Etsy Sellers Make With Digital Products

Digital products are the best margins in e-commerce — no inventory, no shipping, sell the same file a thousand times. But most new Etsy sellers leave money on the table with the same five mistakes.

1. Pricing Too Low

The instinct is to price at $2.99 to “get sales.” Don’t. Buyers equate price with quality, and Etsy’s fees eat small transactions alive. Our printable packs sell at $9.99 — and outsell cheaper competitors. Price for the value, not the file size.

2. Ignoring the 20MB File Cap

Etsy caps digital files at 20MB each, 5 files per listing. If your ZIP is 33MB, buyers get a broken download and you get a 1-star review. Split large packs into parts before uploading — we learned this the hard way.

3. Weak Preview Images

Buyers can’t touch a digital product, so your preview images ARE the product. Show the work styled — framed on a wall, not just flat files. Etsy allows 10 images; use at least 5.

4. Forgetting Tags Are Your SEO

Etsy gives you 13 tags of 20 characters each. Every tag is a search query you’re competing for. “Vintage cat art” beats “art” every time. Research what buyers actually type — then use all 13 slots.

5. No Free Sample Funnel

The sellers winning on Etsy give something away. A free sample listing captures emails, builds reviews, and funnels buyers to paid products. Our free Cat Pack sample has driven more paid sales than any ad we’ve run.
